PREVENTION OF HOUSE THEFTS

-CITIZENS INITATIVES


I. HOW OFFENCES ARE COMMITTED: 

Ø      Look from the point of view of a burglar and many vulnerabilities are exposed.

Ø      Common modes are by forcing open the window grills, breaking open door locks, through ventilators grills, cutting pad locks

Ø      Gaining entry  by  using household tools left out side the house

Ø      By removing tiles  of the roof, if it is a tiled roof house

Ø      Using legitimate or duplicate key, if the burglar could get hold of your lost keys.

 

II. HOW TO SECURE:

  1. Keep windows and doors closed & locked when you are not present in your house. Test them after closing leave one light inside and outside “ON” if you have a timer facility. 
  1. Do not leave money or valuables lying  about unprotected in your living quarters. All portable light value items have to be placed under special lock protection. 
  1. Never hesitate to question a stranger about reasons for being around the area. If anything is found suspicious report to the Police immediately. If you have digital or a mobile camera, you may like to keep a photograph of the persons. 
  1. Keep  large sums of money or jewellary in a bank safe deposit. 
  1. Do not hide keys under the door mat, in a flower pot, on top of electricity meter box or in a window etc. 
  1. Don’t leave notes outside your house about your period of absence. 
  1. Cancel  delivery of newspaper and magazines, milk when away 
  1. Change all locks when your house keys are lost. 
  2. If you have a security Alarm system, ensure that it is tested periodically an in working condition. 
  1. Make sure you switch “ON” the light, when to are going away. 
  1. Ask your neighbours to keep an eye on the house. 
  1. Keep your Cell Phone with you and be contactable when you are away. 
  1. If you are away for along time, inform the local police station, they will ensure the night beat constable visits  the place. 
  1.  If you can,  have some trustworthy persons spend the nights at home during your period of absence.

PERSONAL PROTECTION OF WOMEN

-AGAINST OUTRAGING OF MODESTY

I. HOW OFFICERS ARE COMMITTED (OUTRAGING MODESTY)

       Ø      On public transport, in buses, local trains etc.,

Ø      In crowded areas like very busy markets, theaters, function places, religious and other social gatherings etc.,

Ø      In isolated places, like parks; dark lonely streets, deserted bus stops, railway platforms, lifts, isolated corridors 

Ø      Young girls can get molested  or raped  on their first date with a stranger whom they met online on a chat.

Ø      At work place by superiors

 

II.  PREVENTIVE MEASURES: 

  1. Never enter the lifts with a stranger, wait for the next turn 
  1. When coming home late ask your family members to wait at the bus stop preferably to escort you home 
  1. Always use the “ladies” doorway  to enter and exit in a public transport 
  1.  If someone is found touching you inappropriately alert other passengers and seek the help of the driver 
  1. Never take short cuts through dark, deserted places. Keep to well lit areas where there are people and traffic. 
  1. Don’t go for a walk or jog in a completely secluded area. 
  1. Be alert about your surroundings. If you suspect some one following you, do not panic. Just walk to the nearest Police Station or use your cell phone to call for help or just walk to the nearest public place where people are seen or any business premises. 
  1. If your assailant is armed and you feel, you may not be able to physically defend yourself, do no resist violently, as it may provoke the assailant further. Be calm and buy time by delaying his moves further. Look carefully at the assailant and remember his distinct  features. 
  1. Do not disclose your personal details on any website on the internet (ex. social networking sites) 
  1. Parents should warn their children on the dangers of internet chat. 

Do not hesitate to inform the next superiors, if your immediate superior is found making  indecent advances towards you. Do not ignore early signals. 

PREVENTION OF VEHICLE THEFTS


- CITIZENS INITIATIVES

 

I. HOW OFFENCES ARE COMMITTED:

      Ø      Tampering with the doors and windows of the Car

Ø      Tampering with the handle lock or the key hole in the case of motorcycle

Ø      Smashing the windows or windscreen

Ø      Using an ignition key of another vehicle

Ø      Using a piece of metal strip or tools to force open car doors.

Ø      Tampering with the electrical ignition mechanisms of the Car or motorcycle. 

 

II. PREVENTIVE MEASURES:

  1. Never leave the vehicle in an unlocked position even if it is for a brief period.
  2. Never leave the keys in the ignition switch
  3. Ensure by checking that you have locked all the doors of the car properly before leaving the parking lot. Same with a motor cycle.
  4. Park the vehicle in a well lit area
  5. Don’t leave valuables such as laptops, mobile phones, briefcase, hand bags, cash cards etc. inside the vehicle
  6. Engrave vehicle registration number of the windscreen
  7. As far as possible avoid parking your vehicle outside the garage or on the road during night hours.
